Project MG Metro 6R4 Chassis Number 001

project001

The sole remaining MG Metro 6R4 prototype, Chassis 001, has been passed over on loan to a number of the original team from Austin Rover Motorsport & Williams GP who both designed and produced the four prototypes back in the early 80s. The aim is to restore the car back to the condition it was in when it first left the Williams GP factory in Didcot, Oxon in February 1983.

The car will be kept for the foreseeable future at the Williams Heritage workshops adjacent to the Williams Conference Centre & F1 Team at Grove. Here the restoration work will take place by members of this group of the original people involved from its very beginnings.

However, whilst a great deal of the effort will be either voluntary or support by Williams Heritage a proportionate amount of money will need to be raised for replacement components for the thirty two year old vehicle which has naturally suffered some wear over the passing of the years.

The first fund raising effort is to be an exclusive day for the loyal fans and enthusiasts of this iconic car. The date is Saturday 16th of April and it will be held at the Williams Conference Centre and Williams Heritage facility at grove in Oxfordshire.

The day will be limited in numbers of attendees and will feature a rare opportunity to meet the original team and the car. See presentations, Q & A sessions, period movies and the original press launch of the car. There will be two of the original factory drivers in attendance for participants to meet and chat with. Plus a good lunch followed by a visit to the Williams Collection of their cars over the decades and a further opportunity to mingle with the team. Plus two famous Gp B cars.

Full details will be announced soon but though numbers are strictly limited places can be reserved now by emailing This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it. with contact details and numbers of attendees.
